What part does alcohol play in your life?

The Play Now/Act Now Festival recognises that young people will and do drink alcohol and sets out to minimise the harms associated with this. In it's 4th year, Play Now/Act Now incorporates four competitions: video/film, graphics, logo design, creative writing, as well as the production of a resource kit.

Open to NSW residents between 18 - 25 yrs of age.

Entrants were asked to examine issues around the harms/hazards associated with drinking alcohol e.g: social, moral or ethical issues where the questions posed in the work are far more thought provoking than the possible solutions.

Welcome to the online magazine for Play Now/Act Now.

Play Now/Act Now is a harm minimisation alcohol education project that centres on raising awareness, sharing of information and conveying personal stories, ideas and opinions about the Australian youth drinking culture.
Play Now/Act Now is an education initiative that explores the values, attitudes and behaviours young people have towards alcohol. The project recognises that 18-25 year olds will and do drink alcohol, so the focus is on encouraging young people to think about their drinking patterns, do their own research on alcohol and to make informed drinking choices.

Play Now/Act Now celebrates the rich and diverse talent of filmmakers, graphic artists, storytellers and logo designers from across NSW. This talent confirms that the Australian arts industry is in good hands.

I would like to thank our entrants for their time, effort and generosity in providing us with a window into their lives. I invite you to engage with the work, learn from their stories, be inspired and entertained.

I would also like to make mention of our state wide tour which screens finalist films alongside other video/film entries. This tour will travel through western Sydney and rural and regional NSW.
For details of venues and times please check the ON TOUR link at the top of the page.

Play Now/Act Now recognises that it takes a lot of effort and organisation to produce a short film and that not everyone can be selected for screening at the Sydney awards night. So we have decided to reward everyone. If you produce a film and it isn't selected for screening in Sydney and your area hosts a tour date then your film will also be screened on this date. This way everyone will have a chance to see their work on the big screen in front of the general public.

In past years Play Now/Act Now has been exclusively held as a film and video competition. In 2005, to allow for greater accessibility to all 18-25yr olds, the competition has been expanded to include graphics, creative writing and logo re-branding design.

We asked you to re-brand the Play Now/ Act Now project with a new name and logo for 2006.
The re-branding of the project for 2006 is to ensure the initiative remains fresh and culturally relevant to young people.
The winning entry might include the following references;
* youth culture
* title incorporating alcohol/ drinking / action reference (subtlety is not a bad thing!!)
* logo that can work across mediums eg. print, web, screen, etc.

It is important to us that everyone has a chance to tell their story and have their voice heard. Even though video and filmmaking is seen as accessible and cheap in many cases it is not easy to find the equipment or know how to use it. So we have opened our competition up to accept more forms of expression. We will accept any type of writing, including short stories and poetry, we will also accept any type of graphics, which includes, photography, painting, drawing, comic strips, etc.
